The four components of daily energy expenditure

Total daily energy expenditure is made up of resting metabolic rate, the energy used to digest food, planned exercise, and non-exercise activity such as fidgeting, walking and general daily movement.

  • Resting metabolic rate: usually the largest share.
  • Thermic effect of food: rises with protein intake and total food volume.
  • Exercise activity: planned training sessions.
  • Non-exercise activity: the most variable component between people and over time.

What adaptation actually looks like

As body mass falls, energy expenditure falls too, because there is less tissue to maintain and less mass to move. On top of this, spontaneous movement often declines, sometimes substantially, without conscious awareness.

Researchers describe an additional reduction beyond what body-mass change predicts as adaptive thermogenesis. It exists, but in most published work it is modest — not the dramatic metabolic damage described in marketing material.

What adaptation is not

A slowed metabolism does not make weight loss impossible, and it is not caused by eating a normal amount of food. Extremely low intakes and very long aggressive deficits, however, do tend to increase fatigue and reduce daily movement.

How to work with it rather than against it

Moderate deficits, adequate protein, resistance training, deliberate step targets and periodic maintenance phases all help preserve expenditure and adherence.

Can dieting permanently ruin my metabolism?

Evidence does not support permanent metabolic damage from ordinary dieting, though expenditure does fall with lower body mass and can stay somewhat reduced after large weight loss.

Does eating more fix a slow metabolism?

Eating at maintenance for a period can restore energy, movement and adherence, but it is a recovery strategy rather than a way to increase fat loss directly.
