What macronutrients are

Macronutrients are the three nutrients that supply energy: protein, carbohydrate and fat. Alcohol also supplies energy but is not a nutrient the body requires.

Total energy intake drives weight change more than the exact split between them, but the split strongly affects hunger, energy, training performance and muscle retention.

Protein: satiety and muscle retention

Protein is the most filling macronutrient per calorie for most people and supports the retention of muscle during weight loss. Spreading intake across meals is generally easier than concentrating it in one.

Carbohydrates: fuel and fibre

Carbohydrates are the body's most convenient fuel, especially for higher-intensity activity. Choosing mostly minimally processed sources also brings fibre, which supports fullness and digestive health.

Fat: essential, dense and easy to overshoot

Dietary fat supports hormone production and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. It is also energy dense, which makes oils, nut butters and dressings the most common source of accidental calorie creep.

A practical approach without tracking

Rather than chasing percentages, build most meals around a protein source, a fibre-rich carbohydrate, plenty of vegetables and a measured amount of fat.

  • A palm-sized protein portion at each main meal.
  • One or two cupped hands of carbohydrate, scaled to activity.
  • One to two fists of vegetables or fruit.
  • A thumb-sized portion of added fats.

Do macro ratios matter for weight loss?

Total intake matters most for weight change, but adequate protein and fibre make a given intake much easier to sustain.

Are carbohydrates fattening?

No single macronutrient causes fat gain on its own. Excess total energy intake over time does.
